My name is Debra Butler, and I was born in Southern California and grew up in Huntington Beach (“Surf City USA”). I spent many summers at the beach, but spent most of my free time training at the gym. As a gymnast, I competed on UCLA’s gymnastic team as a freshman. I then switched my goals to academics and graduated from UCLA School of Medicine to begin my career as a physician in the field of diagnostic radiology.
I developed a passion for photography in 2006 on a trip to Sweden and I have never looked back. My profession as a physician was often demanding and sometimes stressful, so photography became my creative outlet and way of relaxing. I spent hours enjoying nature’s beauty as I captured it through my photography. As my passion for photography grew, I devoted more and more of my free time to learning and improving my skills as a photographer.
After 22 years as a physician, I converted my love of photography from a hobby to a profession. I am a self-taught photographer and my interests include nature, sports, and portraits.
It is the small things in life that make me happy. I smile for hours after capturing the wonder of nature, the depth of someone’s smile, or the passion in their eyes.
My goal is to share the beauty of what I experience behind the lens with those on the other side.
