For me, it's all about the process... I find the creative process to be centering as if it were a form of meditation. Creating within a process can also be very helpful when working in collaboration with a client to design and plan a shoot. I was a dedicated zone system photographer when I worked with film and, while it's not quite the same in digital photography, I try to adhere to the principles. My process for making a photograph begins with visualizing the finished image including its intended use. This approach forces me to slow down and consider the options best suited to intentionally craft the image I have in mind. Experience has taught me that the visualization stage doesn't necessarily need to be a formal drawn out process, and can occur spontaneously, as it often constitutes the very intent to create itself. Working backwards from my initial visualization, I select the appropriate camera, lens, filters, camera position, lighting and composition best suited to the shot. All composition is done in camera. I do not crop or resize my images after I take them. I treat my original file as if it were a large format negative and use it to conceptually create a 1:1 "contact print" using photoshop. As far as subject matter goes, I shoot what I feel and sometimes it comes across...
