My name is Ben DeFlorio and I am a Vermont based freelance photographer. I specialize in weddings, portraits, and newspaper/magazine assignment photography, but I love variety and also do commercial work, event coverage, food and products, and custom projects. When I’m shooting just for myself I enjoy street photography and landscapes.
I am a quiet, but confident person and my photographic approach reflects this. At events like weddings I aim to be right there when needed for the key moments and quietly capturing candid moments which represent the spirit of the day the rest of the time. With portraits I like to take time to get to know the subject, I like to go to a location that is important to them, and I like to be patient and collaborate with the subject to get images that show their personality. I enjoy the challenge of news assignments, the need to anticipate and position myself, the need to tell the story in a picture or two, and the need to work under a tight deadline. I also love to see the finish product, so I work hard to turn around images in a timely manner.
Clients include The Herald of Randolph, The Valley News, Seven Days, Upper Valley Life Magazine, Upper Valley Home Improvement Guide, Kid Stuff Magazine, Dartmouth College, Vermont Law School, Vermont Technical College, Brunswick School, Simon Pearce, Vielet, Harp and Company, Rural Vermont, Avitide, Bedrock Ventures, Inner Traditions, Marsicovetere Law Group, Design Source + Home, Red Hed Manufacturing, New Concept Tools, Massage Professionals of Randolph, Great Eastern Radio, Raq-On Dance Studio, Moving Light Dance Company, Randolph Elementary School, Lake Champagne Campground, Turkey Hill Farm, and the Vermont Prisoner’s Rights Office. Additionally my work has appeared in Zutano, GENLUX, Yale University Graduate School, Vermont Sustainable Jobs Fund, Farm to Institution New England, and Vermont Agency of Transportation materials, among others. And maybe most importantly because of the personal nature of the final product I have provided photographic services for many happy families, couples, and individuals.
I live in central Vermont where I enjoy the changing seasons (and sometimes can’t wait for the change in seasons), I like friendly competition (I'll play ping-pong or wiffle ball with you all day), traveling, and spending time with my wife and dynamo daughter.
Send me an email or give me a call (802-565-8040) to inquire about my services and current rates. I am available for jobs here in Vermont and as far away as you can pay for my travel expenses (Yes, of course I’ll go on your European vacation with you!).

I met Ben during his The 131 Project. He photographed me and my three children. He was relaxed, humble, personable, and kind. The photos were fantastic and captured each of us quite well. When I started looking through his portfolio, I was amazed. He has such a great eye and is immensely talented - not only with portraits but with landscapes as well. Since then, I've gotten to know Ben as a person and continue to be impressed. Recently, he photographed my wedding. He spent hours, quietly capturing precious moments when no one was aware, blending into the environment, paying careful attention to the light, the people, the relationships, and the moments that mattered. The result was beautiful. I've already contacted Ben to request he photograph my son's senior portrait. I wouldn't want anyone else. Ben is reliable, flexible, personable, professional and talented. What more can I say?
Having Ben do my daughters senior pictures was a great experience. From the very beginning, contacting Ben, emailing each other to find a date that worked for all of us, the day of the shoot, to the finished product, Ben was prompt, professional, friendly and fun. The quality of the photos were outstanding. Highly recommend Ben for your photography needs.
We hired Ben to take our daughter Ruby's senior pictures, and we are so happy we did. Ben captured the essence of Ruby and was thoughtful and creative in how he photographed her. The photo's came out beautifully and she/we had a hard time just picking one for her yearbook. He was prompt and very professional and he was very efficient in getting the pictures to us as well. He even suggested that Ruby take a few pictures with her pet ball pythons, Ryou and Sakura. She was very happy and so were we.
Ben does wonderful work! He was very accommodating and was able to capture some amazing shots of me and my family. He was able to catch the magical little moments in between shots as well as get the shots where everyone is smiling (including two rambunctious toddlers). He also made it very easy to access and download all the images after our session. He's great to work with, extremely easygoing and he has an eye for catching the best shots.
Ben is great! Was able to accommodate my fiance and I on short notice for an engagement shoot in VT near Woodstock and Barnard. He was very patient, drove with us and we stopped for some photographs on the road, by a creek, in Woodstock - all over. Really nice guy, takes good photos.
Hiring Ben to photograph our wedding was one of the, if not the, best wedding decisions we made. We planned the majority of our wedding from out-of-state, and did our initial and early exchanges via email and Skype. From the beginning, Ben was accessible and invested in really getting to know who we were and what we envisioned. We were able to meet with Ben prior to the wedding weekend, during which we toured the grounds and discussed the flow of events. Again, Ben took his time with us. From meeting him, I knew his personality and creative eye matched my style and intentions. In addition to being incredibly professional and courteous, Ben has a sweet, quiet nature. But his quietness doesn’t mean he is not present; rather, he has a focus that assures you his wheels are spinning and that he is visualizing at every moment the opportunities to capture. Fast forward to the big day, Ben, and his calming presence, were a welcomed sight. Ben was flexible in alternating between staged and natural moments. He was directive when we needed direction, and at other times encouraged us to pretend he wasn't there. He not only was somehow able to be everywhere at once - capturing all moments from multiple angles - he was also respectful and sweet to guests without being an ounce of intrusive. Many guests commented on that! But, most importantly (in addition to all other reasons to be effusive over Ben), Ben’s photos continue to make me smile as big a smile as the first time I saw them. I don’t know how Ben does it, but he is accurate when he says he is a photo-journalist. The photos he took go beyond capturing the “moments,” they captured the visceral, emotional experience of the day. Far from 2-dimensional, they are brimming with as much joy and love, happiness and pride that we felt in the very moment. And that is a precious time capsule I’ve been so wonderfully gifted. Not to mention, his photographs are just visually stunning and impressively creative in ways I imagine only a keen, nuanced photographer would know how to do. So, yes, I would recommend Ben. If you want a positive experience with a thoughtful, creative, respectful, and incredibly talented photographer, look no further.
Ben went over and beyond what my husband and I were looking for. He was very professional, prompt with all emails and very easy going and a pleasure to work with. Not only that but his pictures were perfect. He was able to capture the small things that I would never have been able to see with out his photography. We had a very relaxed wedding on Vermont on a lake and we even got out in a boat to take photos. There was no stress working with Ben and he captured more than we could have asked for. I continue to have friends and family ask me where I found my photographer since our pictures just stand out. I would recommend Ben to anyone and there is nothing I would have had him do different.
So thankful we happened to stumble across Ben while we were vacationing in Vermont in 2014. It was our first trip with our new baby girl and we wanted to take some photos where my husbands family grew up. Ben happened to be there doing a photoshoot but when he was finished, approached us as asked if we would like him to take a photo for us. That was just the first of many beautiful photos to come. We were so pleased with the photos that we contacted Ben and set up a session for the fall 2015 at which time we were travelling to Vermont with our entire family. Ben was very accomodating & flexible. He traveled to the location of our choice, at the time that worked best for all of us and around the demanding schedules of our small children. He was extremely patient and relaxed and never made us feel rushed or hurried. He was layed back and made us feel comfortable, like we had known him forever, all while still maintaining professionalism. He had a lot of wonderful ideas/suggestions but was also very open to ideas we had and took a lot of candid photos, which worked well with the kiddos who wernt keen on sitting still the whole time :) We recieved a sneek peek very shortly after the shoot which just left us dying to see the rest. His turn around time was amazingly quick and I can not say enough about the quality & price of the actual prints. We would highly recommend Ben DeFlorio Photography!!
We are so happy that we used Ben for our son, Peter's, senior pictures. Ben came to where Peter wanted his pictures taken and spent a lot of time with him. He was very creative adn flexible in looking at the area, finding sports for good shots, and listening to Peter's ideas of what he wanted. Before the day was over we had a preview of the photos, and received all the photos in a little over a week. The quality of the photos is superb, with a nice use of light and depth, that captured Peter with a wonderful naturalness. A few weeks later when Peter was working on his senior page and was including a few of Ben's photos, he was told by several people on the yearbook committee at his school that he had THE BEST senior pictures in his class! We definitely recommend Ben DeFlorio!
From our initial inquiry all the way to post-wedding photo ordering, Ben was a friendly, attentive and professional photographer and person. He did a fantastic job of both capturing the spirit of our wedding, as well as editing the photos afterward. At the wedding itself he was congenial and attentive, but also did a great job of invisibly taking photos. We would both highly recommend him to anyone.
Ben was attentive to our personal needs and the vision we had for our wedding. From the first time that we met he allowed us the space to explain our thoughts and worked to guide us through the creative process. During the wedding, he was able to skillfully capture the most important day of our lives. He was patient and thoughtful while handling the needs of our entire family. We are so grateful for his work and time and would recommend his services to anyone!
My wife Erica and I chose Ben to be our photographer for both our engagement photos as well as for our wedding. Before I describe how pleased Erica and I were with the photos Ben took, I also think that it is important to state how professional Ben was throughout the entire process. Ben was easy to communicate with and went out of his way to fit our schedule. Planning a wedding can be a stressful process and Ben's continued flexibility was greatly appreciated. Erica and I are beyond pleased with the photos Ben took as well as how quickly he was able to get them to us. He was able to capture the key moments of our wedding beautifully and we are equally excited about the candid photos Ben captured of our guests that tell the story of our special day. Erica and I would not hesitate to hire Ben again in the future and we strongly recommend Ben to anyone who may be considering him to photograph their wedding. Please don't hesitate to contact me with any questions. Ryan
Ben did family photographs for me in October of 2014. It was a great experience. He made use of the beautiful backdrop of a Vermont Fall day and captured us in many heartwarming, spontaneous interactions. He was easy to work with and I highly recommend him. The pictures turned out fantastic, and it was a fun afternoon. I certainly couldn't ask for more than that!
We highly recommend, Ben DeFlorio, as a photographer. He was the photographer for our wedding in June of 2012. Ben did an amazing job, he knew what moments to catch, and was sure to ask about any photos we wanted. Since then Ben has been the photographer for my brother’s wedding, and he also did family pictures for us. We can look at the pictures he took and can relive the precious moments of our lives.

We had Ben do our wedding in 2013 and could not have been happier with the results! We did not want to spend a lot of time posing for pictures, and Ben did a great job accommodating us. He really captured the spirit of our wedding without being intrusive. Ben sent us some of the best photos by noon the next day, so we could share them right away, and we didn't have to wait very long for the rest. Best of all, his rates were very reasonable. I highly recommend Ben.
Ben was awesome! I am not very comfortable in front of the camera. He was patient and really took his time to get some great shots. Now I finally have some fabulous portraits that look relaxed and natural. Our session worked out so well that I had him come back to do some family portraits. He will definitely be my first choice for any future professional photography needs!
Not only does Ben take wonderful photographs, he's very easy to work with. He's low key, friendly and tries to help you get the photographs that you want. People look relaxed and natural having realistic interactions, often outside in natural settings. We really enjoyed our sessions with Ben and would go to him with any future photography projects.
