Joan H. Walker has been shooting professionally as a photojournalist for most of her career, dating back to her first nationally published photo in 1990. During Walker’s career, her work has garnered nearly 40 national nominations and awards, and her images have been published in scores of books, magazines and newspapers. In the past year alone, hundreds of images were purchased for publication, including cover photographs for international book publishers, and multiple full-page and two-page spreads for national magazines.
In additional to editorial work, Walker specializes in creating fine portraiture. Walker works individually with each client to create a unique, one-of-a-kind boutique photographic experience, resulting in individually styled wall art pieces. No two sessions will ever be the same but all will include Walker’s complete and individual attention to detail, styling and the creation of memorable pieces for your home.
In August 2015, Walker received the Gold Medal/Photographer of the Year award for her imagery. Walker's images went 4/4 in International Competition with two of the four images reaching the top award status of Loan Collection--both with unanimous judges' decisions. One of the Loan Images was the same as was awarded the top Wedding Image in SEPPA District Image Competition. The other Loan Image, "Bath Time on the Ganges," was a first time entrant in International Competition.
In May 2015, Walker received the Southeastern Professional Photographer's Association (SEPPA) award for the top Wedding Image in the SEPPA District Image Competition. In addition, the image, "Watching His Taillights Disappear," was selected as the cover for SEPPA's May 2015 issue of Southern Exposure magazine.
Walker was also selected in May 2015 by the staff of the Berlin based stock photography company, PicsaStock, as one of the favorite image-makers among their thousands of contributors and was honored with the status of "Popular ♥ Photographer." Walker's images, photography style and more will be will be featured in upcoming emails and blog posts by the international stock image company.
In 2014, Walker was selected to be one of 18 photographers to represent Team USA in the World Photographic Cup competition. (USA took home the gold.) Walker's "Blue and Gold Forever" represented the United States in the "Reportage/Photojournalism" category.
Walker has also received multiple Loan and General Collection Awards from PPA's International Photographic Competition in both 2014 and 2013 competitions.
Walker is a Certified Professional Photographer, NIKON Pro, and a professional member of the following organizations: the Professional Photographers Association (PPA), the Virginia Professional Photographers' Association (VPPA), and the National Press Photographer’s Association (NPPA). She also serves as an Adobe Customer Advisor, and an Influential Photographer/Popular Photographer with the Berlin-based PicsaStock agency.
